A logger can take a crooked tree out of the forest, bring it to the sawmill, and trim off all four sides of the tree to create a perfectly straight and even board. But if you were to stand that board up and look at it from the end, the heart of that wood would still be crooked.
This is exactly what reformation is. No matter how much a man tries to straighten out his life, the Bible refers to his heart in Jeremiah 17:9 as being “deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.”
Imagine that a forest fire was ravaging a rural community. Firefighters were quickly dispatched to the scene to extinguish the fiery inferno. After hours of battling the fire, some men were surrounded by flames. Suddenly an airplane flew over and dropped weighted notes warning, “You are surrounded and will perish unless you take action immediately. There is one narrow corridor of escape, and before long it will be cut off.”
They received a message from above telling them something they couldn’t have known amidst the smoke and furor. Thankfully, they did not question the authenticity or the reliability of the notes but acted on them and were saved.
We live in a culture surrounded by a barrage of “alternative ways” to Heaven, and God is saying, “There is only one escape, and it is through my Son.” Jesus said in John 14:6, “…I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” The only chance an unsaved man has of escaping the eternal fires of Hell is through accepting the narrow passage of salvation. “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.” (Matthew 7:13)
